Common questions
Short answers, with links to the project's own documents where it matters.
What is TrueNorth?
A cryptocurrency forked from Bitcoin Core, with its own proof of work (RandomNorth, a variant of RandomX) so it can be mined with ordinary CPUs. It keeps Bitcoin's model: a public ledger, unspent outputs, the same wallet and RPC tools. Mainnet has been running since October 12, 2026, with no premine, presale, founder allocation or protocol dev fee.
Is this the official website?
No. tncoin.xyz is run by people in the community. The project's only website is truenorth-project.github.io, and its official channels are listed on our home page. If something here disagrees with the project's own documents, the project is right.
How is it different from Bitcoin?
- Proof of work: CPU-friendly RandomNorth instead of SHA-256.
- Blocks: every 2 minutes instead of 10, with difficulty adjusted every block.
- Supply: 512 NORTH per block at the start, halving about every 4 years, then a permanent 8 NORTH per block. There is no fixed cap.
- Addresses: the default address type is P2QRH (
north1z…), designed to protect against future quantum computers. - Reorg limit: nodes refuse to reorganise more than 72 blocks deep.
- Separate network: TrueNorth and Bitcoin nodes won't connect to each other.
How is it different from Monero?
Both use RandomX-style proof of work, but that's where it ends. Monero is a privacy coin with its own codebase. TrueNorth is a Bitcoin Core fork with a transparent ledger: like Bitcoin, every transaction and balance is public. TrueNorth also uses its own RandomX salt, so stock Monero mining software doesn't work without changes.
Are "quantum-resistant" addresses really quantum-safe?
Partly, and the design is honest about it. A P2QRH address commits to a hash rather than your public key, so a quantum computer can't attack coins that are sitting unspent. Signatures today are ordinary Schnorr signatures; post-quantum signature schemes can be added later by soft fork without changing your address. The details are in the project's P2QRH document.
How many NORTH will there be?
About 1.06 billion by the time the reward stops halving, roughly 24 years after launch. After that 8 NORTH per block keeps being paid for as long as the chain runs, about 2.1 million NORTH a year. The full schedule is on the Network page.
Can ASICs or GPUs mine it?
RandomX is built to run best on general-purpose CPUs, and resisting ASICs is a design goal. No ASIC for it is known to exist. GPUs can run RandomX but are much less efficient than CPUs at it.
Can I mine on a laptop or a Raspberry Pi?
Releases are built for Linux and Windows on 64-bit Intel/AMD and for macOS on Apple silicon. A modern laptop works, though it will run hot. There's no ready-made build for the Raspberry Pi; you would have to compile it yourself, and it would be slow. Expect a few hundred hashes per second per core on a desktop CPU.
Is mining profitable?
Nobody can promise that. It depends on your electricity cost, your hardware and what NORTH is worth to you, and the network's hashrate changes every day. Mine with hardware you already have and don't buy equipment expecting a return.
Where can I buy or sell NORTH?
This site doesn't list markets. Be careful with anyone who contacts you offering to sell NORTH, and never send coins to someone who promises to send more back.
What's the 33% guideline?
The project's mining policy asks every pool to stay below 33% of the network's hashrate. Above that, a pool can profit from selfish mining; above 50% it can rewrite recent blocks. You can see current shares on the Pools page.
Is there a testnet?
Yes, testnet4, with test coins (tNORTH) that have no value and their own ports (P2P 49555). The project's testnet guide explains how to join.
How do I avoid scams?
- Download only from the official GitHub releases page, and verify the signature. The guide shows how.
- Never share your wallet file, passphrase or seed phrase. No real support person will ask for them.
- The project has no airdrops or giveaways, and nobody from it will message you first.
- The project has no official Twitter/X, Discord, Telegram, Matrix or YouTube. Accounts claiming to be official aren't.
